About ATEQ
Technology Policy
Rationale :
Unless there are good reasons for doing something, it should not be
done. Here are the reasons why we should be using computer and net technology:
- We need to keep records of our membership and activities in a form
that is easily transportable to other sites and translateable to
other situations;
- We need to communicate with our membership quickly and cheaply:
about issues that affect English teachers; about the support services
and resources we offer;
about conferences (Springboards) and other meetings and workshops we
sponsor; about professional developments that take place elsewhere,
so that our membership
is kept up to date with the field of English Language Arts teaching;
- We need a space where our members can connect and communicate with
each other, economically and over distance.
Electronic technology enables us to do these without taking up a large
amount of physical space and without undue expenditure (since most of
us now have access to computers).
Proposals :
- That we set up a database for record-keeping for ATEQ. The following
records should be kept:
- Membership – the post of ATEQ registrar
should be created (ideally it should be the same person who is
registrar of Springboards,
but if
different, there should be regular communication between the
two registrars so that an up-to-date membership list is maintained).
When
there is a
change in registrar it is relatively easy to e-mail the up-to-date
list to her/his successor.
- Minutes of board meetings should be kept in an electronic
file by the Secretary and can then be easily passed on.
- That we establish a list-serv of ATEQ members. The list-serv enables
us to mass e-mail the ATEQ membership. It also enables ATEQ members
to communicate with the membership. The list-serv requires server space
so ATEQ would have to obtain this space at an institution such as
McGill
or Concordia Faculties of Education. In the interest of supporting
the professional community of teachers, the institutions should provide
the
service free.
We suggest that the Past President be the person responsible
for initiating communication on ATEQ’s behalf on the list-serv,
and for monitoring member feedback.
- That we create an ATEQ website with at least three pages:
- A home page (who we are, what we do, services to members,
etc.)
- A Springboards page where we advertise the conference; calls
for presentation proposals; updated information re speakers
and featured
events of the conference,
etc.;
- A professional resource and announcements page, including
services and resources we offer; what other teachers are doing
with ATEQ services
and support; Footnotes; upcoming workshops, meetings, summaries
of pertinent issues; links to other professional development websites
and resources.
- In order to do this we need an ATEQ member or team of members
to be webmaster(s) – to design and upload the site and maintain
it.
- Again, we could ask for space at one of the Institutions above.
The above represent the beginning steps we could take. The committee
is willing to contact the necessary institutions for assistance in getting
started and to seek volunteers from the ELA community to act as webmasters,
technical assistance, etc.
