Workshops with Sylvia Gunnery

Sylvia Gunnery is a writer, editor, and Education Consultant. Page by Page: Reading/Writing Connections workshop explored ways in which student writers learn from published authors; and Writing for the Middle Years encouraged participants to consider: where experience and fiction meet; themes and characters that matter to young readers; how current trend affect writing; and the need for hopeful endings. Ms Gunnery offers valuable insights.

Review by Noreen Tansey-Lee

…A great session given by an educator who looks to meet the needs of all students. Working from a book that a student is presently enjoying, Sylvia has the child model the writing of the author. Paying close attention to style, ideas, language, punctuation or something a child notices from a published author can be a very powerful tool. Clearly this is an activity adaptable to many interests, as well as varying age and ability levels. Sylvia has opened the doors for potentially great differentiated learning opportunities - opportunities that she promises will have kids do more than we think they can! This was definitely a speaker worth hearing. Look for her latest book The Writer's Circle published by Pembroke to be released in the fall.
