Literacy, Laughter, and Creativity - workshop with Sharon Draper: November 2006
On November 23, 2006, ATEQ sponsored a pre-convention activity for elementary cycles 2 & 3 and secondary teachers, at Palais des Congres in Montreal. Literacy, Laughter, and Creativity, with Sharon M. Draper, award-winning author of Tears of a Tiger and Copper Sun.
Ms Draper is a professional educator as well as an accomplished writer. She has been honored as the National Teacher of the Year, three-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Award, and is New York Times best-selling author. She has spent more than thirty years teaching junior high and high school students how to appreciate the beauty of literature and how to communicate their ideas effectively. Ms Draper travels extensively and has been a guest on television and radio programs throughout the country, discussing issues of literature, reading, and education.
Ms Draper demonstrated how creativity can engage readers, increase reflection, and stimulate learning for students as well as teachers. She offered specific activities and strategies involving music, poetry, art, and literature to enhance any classroom environment. The workshop included suggestions and models, including hands-on and participation activities.
