Past Springboards Conferences
ATEQ successfully sponsored its
32nd Springboards 2006 Conference.
"Strengthening Our Links" 2006 took place April 27& 28th.
Highlights of the two-day conference held at McGill University:

Each year ATEQ awards the John Gaw
Award for excellence. This year,
ATEQ president, Suzy Brisson (right), presented Abigail Anderson,
Coordinator of Curriculum for English Language Arts at MELS, received
the coveted John Gaw Award. Abigail's commitment to our profession
is invaluable and merits our recognition. Congratulations. |

Evening Talk and dinner with Linda Rief, author of Seeking Diversity:
Language Arts with Adolescents, Vision and Voices, and 100
Quickwrites,
took place on April 27th at McGill's Faculty Club. In an animated
workshop, Linda emphasized the importance of student writing and
the need to encourage reluctant writers thus helping them gain confidence
and competence as both readers and writers. |

Rodney Bowling with Mary Eva (hospitality): Using the same
energy and ingenuity that is put into his performances, Rod Bowling,
managing director of Poetry Alive, provided hands-on, ready-to-use
classroom activities to incorporate poetry into any classroom - The
Reading, Writing, and Performing Connection. Rodney introduced teachers
to a methodology that would energize any language arts curriculum. www.poetryalive.com |

Rachna Gilmore: In
keeping with Springboards 2006 theme, Strengthening Our Links, Governor
General's Award winning author, Rachna Gilmore, demonstrated some
exciting creative writing possibilities. Rachna explored some of
the common themes relevant to students, showing how specific cultural
experiences may be woven into the larger framework of society. Rachna
also explored some of the innovative and unexpected ways in which
some of her books for younger readers may be used in the classroom

Kathy Stinson (left) is
a familiar name in children's literature and is author of the Marie-Claire books in Penguin's Our Canadian Girl series and the Pebble
Creek books in Lorimer's new Streetlight series. Kathy's books address
difficult issues faced by many young readers. Ideas come to her
from real-life experiences and people around her. Kathy is also
involved in the Writers in Electronic Residence program. |

| Media staff of Laurier Macdonald
High continue to develop their family history project in
the form of a documentary film. Students and teachers use production
and media literacy skills to transform stories from the latest
book, Ripples in Time, to the screen. For further information,
