About ATEQ

Our Mandate

  • The NAME of the Association shall be the Association of Teachers of English in Quebec (l'Association des Enseignants(es) d'Anglais au Québec) hereinafter referred to as "The Association".
  • Its LOCATION shall be the city of Montreal, Quebec, but it may locate its office or offices as the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee may from time to time establish.
  • The PURPOSES of the Association are:
    • To encourage research and innovation in English Language Arts and in the teaching of English Language Arts
    • To facilitate the professional cooperation of its members
    • To sponsor the publication of desirable articles and reports
    • To further the professional interests and development of the teachers of English Language Arts in Quebec.
  • MEMBERSHIP in the Association shall be open to all persons engaged in the teaching or supervision of English Language Arts at any educational level in the province, and to all others with parallel interests, as determined by the Executive Committee.
  • AFFILIATIONS
    • Any groups may form an affiliate of the Association, subject to the by-laws of the Association and with the approval of the Board of Directors.
    • The Association may become affiliated with any similar professional organization, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
    • ATEQ is an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
    • ATEQ representatives to affiliates should be teachers and should serve a term of up to 3 years to allow for professional development of more people as well as to provide an avenue for active participation by more members outside the regular ATEQ meeting.
  • The FISCAL and ADMINISTRATIVE YEAR of the Association shall reflect the academic year and extend from July 1 to June 30 within which period an Annual General Meeting shall be held.
  • The financial statements of the Association shall be audited annually; the selection of the firm shall be approved at the Annual General Meeting.
  • Members shall pay an ANNUAL FEE to be determined by the members at the Annual General Meeting.
  • The POLICIES of the Association shall be determined from time to time by its Board of Directors with the approval of the members at any Annual or General Meeting, in accordance with the by-laws.
  • The AWARDS of the Association are:
    • The ATEQ AWARD
    • The JOHN GAW AWARD
    • A Special AWARD
    The first two Awards must be given according to the procedures and criteria outlined for them. The Special Award may be given at any time and for any purpose that the Board deems laudable. The recipient may or may not be a practicing educator. Prior to giving the award, the criteria and procedure will be agreed upon by the Board.
  • A BOARD OF DIRECTORS of up to 25 members shall be confirmed at the Annual General Meeting and shall be responsible for shaping the policies of the Association. An attempt should be made to have representation from a variety of regions. Each member shall serve for a term of five years at a time. A quorum will consist of 10 members. After his/her term is completed, the president begins a new 5-year term.
  • The ADMINISTRATION of the policies of the Association shall be carried out by the Executive Committee, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
    • The Board of directors shall establish subcommittees when necessary.
    • The Chair of any subcommittee is responsible to the Board of Directors and may not make decisions impinging on the constitution of the Association, without prior approval of the Board of Directors.
    • At the beginning of its mandate, each subcommittee must establish its budget and submit it to the Board of Directors for approval.
  • The EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE shall consist of six officers elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. These officers are:
    • Past President, to serve for one year
    • President to serve for one year
    • First Vice-President, to serve for one year
    • Recording Secretary, to serve for one year
    • Membership Secretary, to serve for two years
    • Treasurer, to serve for two years
  • It shall be the duty of the Executive Committee to administer all policies shaped by the Board of Directors. All mandates may be renewed for a second term; in cases of a specific need, the mandate may be further extended.
  • This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of all members present at any Annual General Meeting, provided that members have been given notice of the exact nature of such amendment, not less than thirty days before the Annual General Meeting.
